The Department of Roman Archaeology and Late Antiquity focuses on the archaeology and material culture of the Roman Empire, with a particular emphasis on the provinces and early Christian heritage of Pannonia. The curriculum integrates theoretical and practical approaches, providing a comprehensive understanding of Roman archaeology.

In the BA programme, students are introduced to Greco-Roman archaeology, Roman Imperial archaeology, and related fields such as settlement studies, religion, military history, anthropology, numismatics, ceramics, and other material culture studies. These courses equip students with foundational knowledge for advanced studies.

The MA programme, offered in both Hungarian and English, delves deeper into Roman epigraphy, provincial history, and material culture, with a special focus on the eastern provinces.

Practical training is a significant component of the department's offerings. Students participate in excavations at sites in Hungary and internationally, gaining hands-on experience. Key projects include the excavation of late Roman forts at Pilismarót and Tokod, conducted in collaboration with the Balassa Bálint Museum in Esztergom. Other notable projects include research at the imperial settlement of Iovia and archaeological work at Ostia in Italy, in partnership with Humboldt University in Berlin.

Additionally, students benefit from international collaborations, with opportunities to study and conduct research at partner universities such as Cardiff University and the Lebanese University in Lebanon. These partnerships expand their academic and professional horizons.
